Police check FAQs
Common questions about employment and volunteer criminal history checks in Australia.
What is the difference between a Standard and a Volunteer criminal history check?
A Standard (Employment) check is for paid work, contractor roles, professional licensing and positions of trust, and costs $59. A Volunteer check is a reduced-fee check ($29) for unpaid, community-benefit roles in not-for-profit or charitable organisations, and for students on compulsory vocational placements. The information searched is the same; only the fee and eligibility differ.
Can I use a Volunteer check for a paid job?
No. A Volunteer check can only be used where the person holds the role on an unpaid basis for community benefit, is not an employee, contractor or officer of an organisation, and receives no salary or benefits. Work for the Dole participants and Family Day Care providers, educators, assistants and family members are not eligible for a Volunteer check.
Does National Clearance Australia provide Working with Children Checks or NDIS Worker Screening?
No. Working with Children Checks and NDIS Worker Screening are issued by state and territory Screening Units, not by National Clearance Australia. If your role requires one of these, you must apply through your relevant state or territory Screening Unit.
How much does a police check cost in Australia?
With National Clearance Australia, a Volunteer nationally coordinated criminal history check costs $29 (including GST) and a Standard (Employment) check costs $59 (including GST). Most results are returned within 24 hours.
How long does a nationally coordinated criminal history check take?
Around 70% of checks are returned within 24 hours. Some checks are referred to police for manual review and can take longer, particularly where a name is common or matches police records across multiple states or territories.
I'm getting a police check for a hospitality or licensed-venue role — do I need anything else?
Many hospitality, bar and licensed-venue roles also require accredited training such as RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol), RCG/RSG (Responsible Conduct of Gambling) or a licensee course, alongside your police check. National Clearance Australia's parent company, Job Trainer Australia, is a nationally recognised training organisation providing online RSA, food safety and licensee courses across Australia.
